It’s that special time of the year again we all love, the koha is singing and the red erabadu flowers are blooming which means Avurudu, is just around the corner. Avurudu means lots of fun activities, delicious food and meaningful customs. Avurudu marks the beginning of the New Year for us according to the traditional solar calendar. The festival usually falls in April, when the Sun moves from Pieces Zodiac sign to Aries. The arrival of Avurudu is a time to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one with hope, happiness and a fresh start.
There are many wonderful traditions that make Avurudu unique. The most exciting part for children is often the games. From tug-of-war and pillow fights “kotta pora” these games bring lots of fun and laughter, while children and adults alike come together to play and share many happy moments.
Another Avurudu speciality is the special sweets. I am sure you all are eagerly waiting to taste delicious treats like konde kavum, kokis, asmi, athirasa and mung kavum. I am sure your mom’s are busy preparing many sweet treats, this year as well, why not get together with your mom and siblings and prepare a sweet treat you have never made before, like kalu dodol, udu wel or bibikkan?
One of the most exciting moments of Avurudu are the new year rituals. These rituals are full of meaning and are passed down through generations. For example, the punya kalaya, hisa thel gama and choosing the Avurudu kumari symbolise hope for the future and invoke blessings for the up and coming New Year. Children and adults wear new clothes to mark the occasion, which makes it extra special.
When the Avurudu moment dawns, I am sure you will all gather around with your families, exchanging gifts, sweets and good wishes. The elders give children money or presents as a sign of love and good fortune for the New Year, while the children will worship their parents and elders with beetle leaf as a mark of respect. This time is all about respecting our culture and traditions and staying true to our beliefs which is part of what makes being Sri Lankan special.
Avurudu is not just about games and food—it is a time to be with family and friends, sharing love and joy. It teaches us to be grateful for the blessings in our lives, and to always look forward to new beginnings. It’s also a time to remember the importance of being kind to one another and helping those in need.
The spirit of Avurudu is about happiness, togetherness, hope and respecting our cultural heritage. I am sure for you children; it’s a time of great excitement and adventure. It reminds us that, no matter how old we are, we can always find joy in family, tradition, and the little things that make life beautiful.
So, as the Sun rises on another Avurudu, let’s celebrate it with a big smile on our faces and a heart full of gratitude. Whether we’re playing games, enjoying sweet treats, or spending time with our loved ones, Avurudu is a time to treasure and remember always! Happy Avurudu to you all!
See you next week!
