Lissana Gaha
One of the most exciting and funny games during Sri Lanka’s Avurudu (New Year) celebrations is the Slippery Pole also called the Lissana Gaha in Sinhala. The set up is a tall pole placed in the middle of the playing area, and at the very top, there is usually a fun prize like a flag, a sweet treat, or a small toy.
The pole is made slippery with oil or soap, so it’s tricky to climb! The game starts with everyone standing at the bottom of the pole. When the signal is given, the players race to climb the slippery pole. It’s really hard to keep your grip, and many people slip and slide down while trying to reach the top.
The first person to reach the top and grab the prize wins the game! It’s so much fun to watch because everyone will slip and slide in the funniest ways. This game is loved by everyone, big and small, because it’s full of laughter and excitement. It’s a great way to enjoy time with family and friends during Avurudu, and it’s sure to bring lots of smiles and giggles.
