The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. It’s celebrated on 13th and 14th in April. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is also known as the Aluth Avurudda. Tamils call this festival, Puthandu. The Sinhala and Tamil New year comes every year and it’s a very special day for the Sinhalese and Tamils. It’s one of the most important festivals in my country.
People clean their houses and buy new clothes to celebrate this festival. They also make sweetmeats such as kiri bath, kavum, kokis, aluwa, aasmi and mung kavum.
The Sinhala New Year includes many traditions such as lighting the hearth at the auspicious time, going to temple during the Punya Kalaya, cooking milk rice at the auspicious time, starting work at the auspicious time, transaction and partaking of the meals, anointing the head with oil and leaving for work at the auspicious time.
At this festival, we all come together and play games such as ludo, tug-of-war, kana mutti bidima, kotta pora gaseema and many more.
We love this Avurudu season.
