The Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) of Sri Lanka proudly hosted the eqUIP19 2025 programme from 1 to 4 April 2025 at Occidental Paradise Dambulla, marking the first time this flagship initiative was held in Asia. The milestone event brought together young sports leaders from across the region, underscoring Sri Lanka’s growing influence in global sports development.
eqUIP19, a pioneering initiative of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), is designed to develop young leaders across the Commonwealth by providing them with hands-on experience in sports administration, governance, and development. By hosting this prestigious programme, Sri Lanka reaffirms its commitment to nurturing future generations of sports professionals and fostering international collaboration.
The programme saw participation from four mentors and four interns representing Bangladesh, the Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The sessions were led by Richard de Groen, Head of Programmes and Investment at CGF, and Olympian Melody Cooper, Regional Development Manager for Oceania and Asia at CGF. Through engaging workshops and leadership development activities, participants gained crucial skills to shape the future of sports in their respective countries.
Beyond the educational aspect, the Team 19 interns were immersed in Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. A highlight of the programme was a visit to the iconic Sigiriya and the participants engaged in storytelling, traditional performances, and cultural exchanges. As part of this cultural experience, LOVI Ceylon sponsored traditional Sarongs and shirts for all participants, enhancing their appreciation of Sri Lankan heritage.
The closing ceremony was a celebration of Sri Lanka’s vibrant traditions, featuring an enthralling lineup of Magul Beraya, Pal Kavi, Gami Dance, Wes Dance, Mask Dance, and Fire Dance performed by the Ipanalla Folk Culture Centre.
Speaking on the impact of the programme, Maldivian mentor Eeman Ibrahim shared, “The program served as a dynamic platform for young interns from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives. By equipping participants with essential skills and career-building experiences, the initiative not only accelerated professional growth but also fostered meaningful regional collaboration among the next generation of leaders.”
Intern Anna Ibtisam from Pakistan added, “Filled with purpose and cultural warmth, the experience in Dambulla connected me with passionate individuals from across the Commonwealth. Rooted in the spirit of sports and shared values, it ignited a deep sense of unity, responsibility, and excitement for the journey ahead.”
As Sri Lanka sets a new benchmark in sports leadership development, the success of eqUIP19 2025 paves the way for further investments in youth-driven sports initiatives across Asia. The CGA Sri Lanka remains committed to building a stronger, more inclusive sports ecosystem through such transformative programs.
