
Esandi Newansa with her medal
Sri Lanka’s WCM, Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda clinched the country’s bronze medal at the FIDE World Schools Chess Championship 2025 held in Serbia recently.
Esandi Newansa competed in the Under-17 category, secured her place on the podium by defeating Antonia Stefania Voican (Romania), Elisa Andreea Dumitrache (Romania), Tamara Jankovic (Serbia), Pelin Seyhan (Turkey) and Aiaru Altynbek (Kazakhstan). Esandi Newansa lost to Batpelden Buyankhishig (Mongolia) and Anastasia Kirtadze (Georgia) who won the gold medal and silver medal respectively.
Esandi Newansa was drawn between Kusakina (FIDE) and Chole Heather Wang (USA) where 24 competitors participated. Esandi Newansa earned 6 points from 9 points with 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Esandi Newansa has won many medals in international events so far. (YK)
