The Ministry of Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Road Development Authority (RDA) and Hatton National Bank PLC (HNB), has introduced card payment options at highway toll gates, marking a significant step forward in the modernisation of Sri Lanka’s transport infrastructure and the promotion of a digital economy.
As part of the pilot phase, card payments are now accepted at toll gates at the Kottawa and Kadawatha interchanges on the Southern Expressway. This initiative, which aligns with the Ministry’s broader digital strategy, aims to enhance commuter convenience by providing a secure, cashless payment alternative at these key interchanges.
HNB, as the solution provider for Point of Sale (POS) card payment systems, has played a key role in implementing the infrastructure y for this new service. The toll payment system supports a range of international and local card networks, including Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay International (UPI), LankaPay – JCB, and American Express (Amex.
The card payment system is designed to be universally accessible, regardless of the issuing bank, enabling all commuters to use the service with ease. The initiative supports Sri Lanka’s broader vision of creating a cashless, efficient, and secure digital economy.
