Ministry of Education sources said that May 5 and 6 have been declared school holidays due to the Local Government (LG) elections.

The LG elections will be held on May 6. The sources said that after the school holidays for the LG elections, school activities will resume as usual from May 7. The school buildings proposed to be used as polling stations will be assigned to the Grama Niladharis on May 4. Teachers have also been assigned for polls duties and they were given an opportunity to vote by post.

Twenty-four schools in and around Kandy that were closed due to the “Siri Dalada Vandanawa,” the special Exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic, will reopen tomorrow (April 28), said the Chief Secretary of the Central Province. Another 37 schools that are now accommodating Police and Security Forces personnel will reopen on Tuesday, April 29. Over 50 schools in the Kandy City and surrounding areas were closed from April 21 in view of the special Exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic after 16 years.
