S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia powered their way into the Dialog President’s Trophy Inter-Schools Knock-Out Rugby Tournament quarter-finals with a smashing 59-35 victory over their hometown rivals Science College in a thrilling Mount Lavinia Derby played at Longden Place yesterday.

The Thomians, who led 33-14 at half time, scored seven goals and two tries while Science College managed five goals in a match filled with attacking rugby from both sides.

S. Thomas’ got off to a flying start when Mckayle Karunaratne touched down in the third minute. Winger Mayanka Dias added the conversion for a quick 7-0 lead. By the 14th minute, the Thomians stretched their advantage to 14-7 before Science College hit back with a converted try to narrow the gap.

Mayanka then sprinted down the left wing to score a superb try in the 17th minute and converted it himself, making it 21-7. Methuka Edirisinghe scored for Science College after a maul and Dilruwan Perera added the extras to make it 14-21.

The Thomians regained control as Aiden Amaraweera powered over in the 28th minute, with Dias adding the conversion for 28-14. Young fly half Udan Bulathsinhalage crossed in at the far corner before half time to make it 33-14.

Science College fought back after the break but the Thomians widened the gap with successive tries and conversions. Gayan Hameed’s late try and Dewin Seneviratne’s conversion sealed a massive 59-35 win.

Science’s scrumhalf Methuka Edirisinghe completed a hat-trick of tries in a losing cause.

Zahira edge out Vidyartha

Zahira College Colombo recorded a tight 16-12 win over Vidyartha College in another pre quarter-final match played at Havelock Park yesterday.

Zahira led 8-0 at half time and held on through two tries and two penalties while Vidyartha managed two tries and a conversion in a low-scoring, physical contest.

Isipathana rout Sumangala

Defending champions Isipathana College crushed Sri Sumangala College, Kandy by a commanding 61-0 at Royal Sports Complex.

Isipathana dominated from the start, leading 23-0 at half time and scored a total of 10 tries, four conversions and a drop goal in the biggest win of the day.
