Sri Lanka will begin an important challenge today as the Women’s Tri-Nation One Day International Series gets underway at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The home team will meet India in the opening match commencing at 10.00 a.m.
This series comes at a perfect time for all three teams with just five months to go for the ICC Women’s World Cup in India. The tournament gives Sri Lanka a valuable chance to test their players, try out fresh talent and sharpen their skills in home conditions before the big event.
Sri Lanka, captained by experienced batter Chamari Atapattu, has picked a strong squad with a good mix of youth and experience. Young stars like Under-19 Captain Manudi Nanayakkara and Vice-Captain Rashmika Sewwandi will have a chance to prove themselves alongside senior players.
Indian Captain Harmanpreet Kaur said it’s a great opportunity to play against two competitive sides before the World Cup. South Africa Captain Laura Wolvaardt, who celebrated her birthday yesterday also, said that playing in the subcontinent is very important with the World Cup in India on the horizon.
The tournament is sponsored by Lanka IOC through their Servo brand and all matches will be open for fans to watch free of charge at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
