Expansion of the Bhikkhu Order

4 June, 2017

Sakyamuni Gautama having attained Buddhahood
Decided to proclaim the truth he discovered to the world
He set on foot to Beranes the capital of Kasi kingdom
With a determined mind to deliver his wisdom
He delivered to the five ascetics his first sermon
So starts Sangha after the wheel of Dhamma was setin
VenKondagnna attained the eye of Dhamma
And became the first disciple due to his kusalakamma

The Buddha delivered the second sermon subsequently
The others listened with faith and became Arahants consequently
Then he instructed Yasa and his 54 friends at a park
A discourse on moral values and relieved them from the dark
Number being 60, realising they were sufficient
As he wished to start the pioneer movement
He addressed the 60 Arahants to fulfil the sansaric tour
For the wellbeing of the humanity to be sure

“Oh Bhikkus you should wander forth out of compassion
Do not go together two of you in the same direction”
The Buddha himself set out for Rajagaha his venue
And preached Dhamma to 3 Jalila brother and 1,000 of his retinue
In the expansion of Sangha the next important event
Was arrival of two youths – the true friends they meant
Well brought up, well-disciplined they listened to the doctrine
Got the opportunity to acquire a position supreme

Kolitha Upatissa who belonged to leading families
Entered the order and Buddha pronounced them chief disciples
Buddha explained the significance of rare occasion
From a previous Buddha they had received permission
Buddha Anomadassi who with his divine insight
Had predicted in Sasana they would be the chief disciples next
Due to extreme pious lives led in Buddha Sasana
The two chief disciples now are Sariputta, Moggallana
