The 159th birth anniversary of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala, who rendered a yeoman service to perpetuate the Sambuddha Sasana, falls today, September 17, and many events have been organised across
the country to mark the occasion. The main event will be held at 10 am today at the Maligakanda Mahabodhi Agrasrawaka Maha Vihara, Maradana chaired by Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Association President Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera and presided over by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. The Kurunegala Young Men’s Buddhist Association (YMBA) has also organised a commemorative ceremony for Anagarika Dharmapala at the YMBA main hall in Kurunegala today at 9.00 am.
The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Ven. Anamadue Sri Dhammadassi Anunayake Thera and it will also be attended by North Western Province Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, President of the Kurunegala YMBA, N.S.K. Wijenayake and Secretary Dr. Susantha Kosgolla.
Hewavitharana Maha Vidyalaya, Rajagiriya will hold a commemorative ceremony, procession, Dhammadesana, alms-giving, floral tributes and a commemorative lecture today to mark the birth anniversary of Anagarika Dharmapala..
The 125th anniversary of Hewavitharana Maha Vidyalaya is also being celebrated. The college was founded by Anagarika Dharmapala.
Sri Jayewardenepura Zonal Education Director Nirmala Kumari Ekanayake will preside over the event and the commemorative lecture will be delivered by Ven. Malewana Dharmawijaya Thera.
Floral tributes will be paid at the Anagarika Dharmapala statue at Mahinda Rajapaksa College, Homagama at 8.00 am today.
