The Kandy Rugby Carnival featuring teams of old boys from Antonians, Kingswoodians, Rajans, Trinitians, Sylvestrians, Vidyarthians and Sumangalians is to be revived shortly.
The first Carnival was held from July 28 to August 1, 1986 and the winners were presented with the Harris Ratwatte challenge trophy.
This Carnival was mainly mooted by CH Seneviratne in an attempt to infuse greater enthusiasm into the game of rugby among the school leavers in Kandy.
Others who extended their support to make it a success were H.M. Halimdeen, Dr. C.D.L. Fernando, Joe Madawella, Deva Amunugama, Rohan Silva, Dudley Gunatillake, Alex Lazarus, Kumar Meeriyagalle and Upali Senanayake.
This tournament will be played in the Sevens format.
MJM Lafir cue tournament
Plans are afoot in Kandy by some cue sports lovers to play an invitation tournament in memory of the first World Cup champion of the country M.J.M. Lafir who won the world billiards title in 1973. The first tournament is expected to be cued off soon.
Thangavelu hockey
A 7-a-side hockey tournament is to be held in honour of the oldest hockey promoter of Kandy P. Thangavelu who passed away a few days back at the age of 99 years.
The former player was a great influence to the game as a player, coach, umpire and administrator. He played for St. Anthony’s College and later for Kandy and was the secretary and committee member of Kandy District Hockey Association (KDHA) for many years. The KDHA presided R. Maheswaran is doing everything possible to make it a grand tournament for men and women.
Trinity footballers win
Trinity College’s football team continued its successful march and are doing well. They emerged group champions in the Sri Lanka Schools Football Federation Tournament held from December 8 to 14 at the Pallekele Rugby Stadium
They beat S. Thomas’ College 2-1 in their schools under-20 match played at Cooray Park Wellawatte with Yevan Hulangamuwa and Vidumeth Dhammage scoring the goals for Trinity while Anudha Ellawela scored the goal for S. Thomas’.
Antonian girls in semis
St. Anthony’s Girls College Kandy made Kandy proud by entering the semi-final in the inter-school girls’ under-19 division II cricket tournament. They beat Dudley Senanayake Central by 117 runs.
St. Anthony’s girls batting first scored 206 in 29.1 overs and in reply D.S. Senanayake Central scored only 89 in 18.3 overs.
