Sylvestians shine in chess

The Central Province National School Games chess tournament was held and St. Sylvester’s College under-20 side emerged as the boys’ runners-up and two under-20 boys Nipun Dewamitta and Pasan Wijesinghe won awards.

The team members were Pasan Wijesinghe, Okitha Sumanasinghe, Nipuna Dewamitta, Daham Senarathne, Quays Hafeel, Sithuila Gangewatta, Chethia Perera. Nine of the Sylvestrian players were selected for the provincial event.

They were (under-7) Omitha Mapa, Ganula Ratnayake, Risitha Nanayakkara, Dinura Rodrigo and Senuth Peramunage. (Under-9) RMS Ratnayake and Himantha Dodanwala. (Under-11) Buvindu Priyadarshana and Vishwa Siriwardana.

Jaliya back as Sylvestrian coach

Forty one year old Jaliya Weerasinghe who was the coach of St. Sylvester’s College cricket side has come back as coach once again. He led the Sylvestrians in the 2000/2001 season and was a fine wicket keeper batsman. He coached this school from 2014 to 2018 and did a good job and they became the best team in Central Province.

Boxer Michael Bulner dies

Sylvestrians are in deep sorrow due to the death of Michael Bulner in Australia. He was the younger brother of one of the greatest boxers of this school Malcolm Bulner.

Michael has done well and won in meets he took part in. During his boxing days he fought in meets such as the famous Stubbs Shield and LV Jayaweera meets.
