Threaded Dreams: Brussels lace and hand embroidery

4 June, 2017

Threaded Dreams – an exhibition and sale of exquisite hand embroidery and Brussels Lace designed by Andrea Boekel will be held on Saturday, 10th June at the J.D.A. Perera Gallery, Horton Place, Colombo 7, from 9 am. This time, some of her students will also be participants.

The time-honoured craft of hand embroidery is slowly but surely becoming rarer and rarer.

There is something infinitely aesthetic about embroidery and lace that has been created through many hours of painstaking work. Couple that with pristine handmade Brussels lace and the item is surely not just a winner but a piece to cherish for years to come.

The craft has become virtually unviable profitability-wise. Yet, those who love and respect the craft cling on to it to share the beauty with those who appreciate it.Andrea Boekel is one such person. She has, for more than 20 years carried on creating exquisite works in textile: hand embroidery, Brussels lace and more recently, Batik art on silk.

With her team of rural artisans, these pieces have been a fixture with people in Sri Lanka who value a truly Sri Lankan-made product.

Many items, wearable, utility and decorative will be on sale and they include exquisitely embroidered blouses, dresses, nightwear, children’s clothes, table linen, cushion covers and pillow cases. To add interest to the sale there will also be products from the Southern province in the way of beautiful Beeralu lace items. From the North Western province, a small collection of handmade Batik sarees on pure silk items will be available.
