At the end of the rainbow

25 March, 2018

“Look Mom, It’s so beautiful,” Awin shouted out of joy staring at the colours of the double rainbow as it filled the golden evening sky. It seemed to end up in the mountain road. The car hummed softly as it puttered up the empty mountain path that winds ahead as effortlessly as a blanket laid on a bed. Sarah looked at her four year old son through the rear-view mirror and smiled.

“Do you want the pot of gold son?” She couldn’t hide the amusement in her face when she saw his pop eyed look. “A pot of gold?”

“Yes, we can find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow; if you want, we can give it a try,” she winked.

“How much of gold is there mommy?” His dark brown eyes gazed at the cloudless sky again.

“I’m guessing millions of worth; we would be so rich if we found it.” As the car engine sung to the lone country roads, Sarah relished the roaring winds that twirled in her long hair and whistled in her ears.

They came up the hills and as Sarah stopped the car, Awin jumped out of it to find the pot of gold, yelling and overexcited. The sky was an endless canvas, with the colours tossed upon. There was no pot of gold though, just the grassland bathed in colour and luminance. The rainbow seemed large and everywhere they looked, the air was ravishing with colour.

The light shimmered reflecting bands of red, yellow, indigo undulating through the air. It was like a magical fairy dust all around and God had polished the world anew. But Awin was so busy and upset since he couldn’t find the pot with gold, and he didn’t notice the beautiful ambience and looked at his mom with teary eyes.

“We can’t find it, mom”. Sarah wrapped her arms around him grinning.

“Don’t worry son, we would find it for sure. At the same time, we can’t miss all these beautiful colours of rainbow while looking for the pot”.

She stood up and turned a circle, her skin changing colors as she turned. She became a rainbow herself full of lights and colour. Awin was still staring at his mom and slowly came towards her. As he walked he became a rainbow too. The light seemed to be with him, coming out of him rather than reflecting off and he looked happy.

We all chase after our dreams, hoping to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There are treasures to be gleaned in the present moment, even as we go for our dreams. Let’s also take delight in the beautiful colours of the rainbow and the magnificence that it cast.
